Horse racing has existed for more than 200 years in Australia and throughout the world for over 350 years.

As the sport became an industry and gambling was introduced, making a profit soon became the primary objective. In turn, the horses’ welfare was increasingly compromised.

Race meetings are now being held every day of the year across the country. More recently, night racing has also been introduced to further increase betting turnover which now exceeds $21 billion per annum. Horses are being produced on an industrial scale: thousands of horses are bred every year and it has become standard practice to send unwanted horses to the knackery or slaughterhouse.

Harsh training regimes using implements of cruelty (jiggers, tongue ties) confinement and isolation are all standard practice. Whips are used to push tiring and sometimes injured horses across the finish line, all in the name of profits. Drugs, both legal and illegal are used are used. Horses are pushed too hard and too often leading to increased injuries and deaths on the track.

In 2008, after two years of research into the racing industry, the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (CPR) was formed. We immediately sought meetings to discuss the myriad of welfare issues that plagued the industry. Our requests were initially refused.

After a few years of campaigning resulting in significant media attention and a gradual increase in public awareness, the racing industry could no longer ignore the calls for change as the plight of racehorses was becoming common knowledge and the “Sport of Kings” was being exposed.

On October 17, 2019 the ground-breaking investigation ‘The Final Race’ aired on the ABC. Video evidence meant the routine slaughter of racehorses could no longer be denied, and the racing industry was forced to act.

The racing officials’ response was astonishing, not because they finally acknowledged the proof of what happens to many racehorses, but because they pretended to have no prior knowledge of the brutal end faced by thousands of the horses from which the industry profits each year.

Today, in response to the continuing negative media and a social movement away from horse racing, the industry now spends millions of dollars developing equine welfare departments, re-homing programs and changes to the rules to address animal welfare concerns. This money, while acknowledging that improvements are needed, has proven to be largely tokenistic and seemingly designed to improve public perception rather than create meaningful change. We still have the whip, 2 year old racing, regular deaths on track, jumps racing and wastage on an industrial scale.

The catchy marketing slogan #hereforethehorses, which is being used to reassure race goers that the racing industry is really #hereforthehorses appears to be a cynical public relations exercise. We have proven they are not #hereforthehorses and only act when it affects their profits.

CPR exists to be a voice for the racehorse and has created this website so that you can make an informed decision about whether you want to support an industry that fundamentally exploits horses for profit and then pretends to care for them.
