Media Release:
The 500 horse carcasses reported today to be found at a property in Wagga Wagga NSW are likely to be racehorses said Elio Celotto, Campaign Director for Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses, who once again calls for a National Horse traceability Scheme.
“We recently received a tip from an eyewitness about an illegal knackery at a property in Wagga Wagga, which we believe must be the same property. The eyewitness confirmed that the majority of the approx. twenty horses kept in holding yards on the property at the time were racehorses,” Mr Celotto said.
“Racing NSW have banned racehorses from being sent directly to slaughter. However, this is just one example of the failure of the racing industry to protect the racehorses they claim they love.”
“We know approx. one third of racehorses are retired from racing every year. That’s 10,000 plus horses looking for new homes and the homes just aren’t out there. It is no surprise to us that they are being secretly killed en masse in places such as this illegal knackery. This is just the tip of the iceberg.”
“This wouldn’t have happened if we had a national horse traceability scheme that made every horse owner accountable for their horses,” Mr Celotto said.
CPR has been campaigning for a National Horse Traceability Scheme since 2019.

Just another reason why I hate horse racing – this is how most race horses that don’t make the grade end up
Helen Oakton says
They are all chipped and passports here so unless the chip is cut out they are traceable .THIS IS a world wide problem as most foals born in the racing studs are not going to be winners.
Leah says
That must have been confronting to witness. Another disgraceful act by those who claim to love horses.
Sonia says
There should be a limit on the amount of foals bred each year. Godolphin has stated in the past they breed up to a 1000 foals each year. Harvey Norman said proudly on TV that he breeds 500 foals each year, trying to breed another Black Caviar. No Stud should be allowed to breed that amount of foals.
