ABC’s 7:30 has shown Australian’s and the world that horse racing has unequivocally lost its social license.
Watch the breaking episode here.
ABC’s 7:30 has revealed in graphic detail the appalling treatment of racehorses after they finish racing. Despite repeated claims made by the racing industry that they love and care for the horses they use and less than 0.5% are being sent to slaughter, finally the evidence of large numbers of racehorses being killed for pet food and human consumption has been exposed.
CPR has been exposing and educating the public about the brutal reality of horse racing for more than 10 years. What we saw on 7:30 was only part of the story. Stay tuned as CPR vows to continue its fight for justice for racehorses.
This Spring Carnival we would like as many people as possible to be a voice for racehorses and get involved with CPR’s actions.
Take our pledge below to never bet on or attend a horse race again. Your pledge will be sent to all state racing organisations and the governing body, Racing Australia.

Thank you ABC for exposing such cruelty
I can only describe the sub humans I saw inflicting such barbaric acts in the abattoirs as pure evil.As far as I am concerned they are non human entities. I wonder what the minister for racing is going to come up with to obfuscate the facts that the ABC expose showed. How is he going to downplay the video evidence of the brutality many viewers witnessed last night and how many horses are killed you this so called industry.I don’t think I want to listen to his lies and justifications, it would make me want to vomit.
Stencil on the car already. Students at my school spreading the word and posters are up.
Karen Waterman says
My Please stop torturing animals! Australians are sick of this and we all want this to end!!!
I have never ever bet on any animals not will I ever do this. About time something gets done about this inhumane treatment of horses and animals in general
Thank you ABC again for your investigative journalism and again shining a light on the brutality that exists in our society.
Karen Waterman says
This guy who buys horses to take to the slaughterhouse say trainers sell horses to him and they know the horseshoe will be killed. It was in a newspaper article recently.
Nicolas Hodges says
Only too human, unfortunately. Until human beings learn to respect the animals we share this planet with, these sort of atrocities will continue. Let’s hope it happens sooner rather than later. The more people who care speak up and make their voices heard, the better it will be for animals.
Nickolas Damron says
The business of race horse and stallion international sales alone is worse of such there of compared to human trafficking and black market gun sales and The mexican drug cartels and ISIS USA contractors. The hideousness of humanity can only be further revealed in what we further treat not of our own kind.
Disgusting, and pitiful. I live in a state that accommodates patriotically the celebration within the country of such. Within this country is less awful then what’s we’re about there in. Yet, this will never stop me from proudly disputing and reprising the cruelty to these animals even fair treated of a horrible business.
All people need to be made aware of this evil industry
Leanne Harvey says
Thank you to the ABC and all who helped to expose this shocking cruelty.
To all the brave people who risked themselves in gathering evidence of this vile behaviour. THANKYOU.
Everyone needs to wake up to the reality of horse racing
roz mcnulty says
stop this inhumane barbaric treatment of horses
stop the melbourne cup and any horse racing that causes harm to any horse
Ban horse racing. It’s a cruel sport
Nell Bonten says
I watched in horror, the great injustice done to the horses, who are those people, who can inflict so much pain?
It’s not only horses who experience this horrific treatment. They say ,we love our animal, as long as they make money! Thank you 7.30 and the reporter’s
Narelle Auld says
Sickening – who the hell are these people? Thank you 730 for the exposure of the absolute unimaginable. Who could possibly continue in this ‘sport!!!?????’ Will donate – thank you to those on the frontline fighting for the rights of the innocent. Will be proactive with you. x
Horse Racing is only one of the Evil Industries. ABC should look into all others as well.
Just get rid of all animal racing.
They all should no better but choose everyday not to. Everyone from the slaughterhouse up to the very top of this so called sport forever has blood on their hands now this is exposed. Instead of stopping a nation and token efforts to keep money coming in how about show some bloody respect for life and just stop.
Daniel Leahy says
This is disgraceful and it’s all because a man wants to hold a cup in his hand. If he want to hold a cup run a race himself.
Ban Ayar says
I have never and will never celebrate or participate in any kind of animal racing. Don’t support it, don’t gamble on the lives of the horses.
Stop this abhorrent practice now. It’s inhuman.
Never have and never will support this Industry
Alex Hodges says
Same here ! Have never attended races or bet on any ! These beautiful animals are just expendable machines. They can never win enough money for the greedy, are discarded as soon as they hurt themselves or run out of steam, if a mare they become breeding machines (Check out Makybe Diva, Black Caviar, Winx ??). Animals never win when they are forced into gambling industries ? Many horses are traumatised, raced too young, having endured awful training methods, have to endure flights all over the world, the list of cruelty goes on ?!
This is absolutely disgusting..How can we begin to think this is ok..everyone needs to be made aware of this cruelty…
Heartbroken but now they can’t hide
Kaia Mitchell says
Heartbreaking and sickening, had to force myself to watch this inhumane cruelty. But needs to be shared for the plight of these and future young and healthy, discarded horses.
Ellie McCallum says
Seems that the horse racing is now made up of greed cruelty and humans without respect or affection in their lives and the magnificent racehorses are paying most cruelly for for it.how people could actually watch this occur and do sweet FA is the biggest mistake they will ever make.even worse are the creeps who are abusing before slaughtering them is the lowest of the low.you all have reserved your place in the bowels of Hell with the rest of the trash of life,
Stop the abuse of these poor animals. No one likes to be whipped. It’s so very sad.
I was in tears when I was watching this report
This is awful behaviour ANIMAls have feelings as well
It’s a disgusting industry run by disgusting people. This isn’t the dark ages and ignorance is no excuse.
Touche. It doesn’t bear thinking how those beating the horses treat their wife and children.
Alex Perry says
Never attended a race and never will but will now never participate in any workplace cupsweep. There is nothing fun about this industry.
Good for you Alex Perry
Mandy De Stefano says
Gambling on the fate of a horse for entertainment is pure evil.
Thank you for finally exposing the racing industry for what it is!!
Pennie Lynch says
Absolutely appalling, never have gambled on any animal. I knew this was happening to racehorses but had never seen footage. Worse than I imagined…going to go hug my horses and have a good cry for the lives lost.
Helen Danaher says
Congratulations on the expose as shown on 7.30.
Enormous admiration for those who care so much for animals, and act on their commitment.
I appreciate the emotional distress that was undoubtedly endured during the collection of this information.
You are very good people.
This torture, abuse and slaughter of magnificent creatures who give their all for human entertainment and are then tossed away like waste when they are of no further use is an horrendous indictment on the racing industry. Shame on these people. And the low lifes who torture and inflict sadistic pain on animals about to die deserve a special kind of justice.
animals should never be used in any way to make money. Greed brings out the worst in people and animals become just profit generating assets for a while until they eventually become liabilities to be gotten rid off.
Mark Crossett says
Cant say anything…too disgusted and upset.
Inga Lie says
I loved the races and even went to the Melbourne Cup once. I loved dressing up. I never much thought about the well-being of the horses. I don’t know much about horses and just assumed everything was legit. It’s Australia after all, not some primitive, barbaric country that turns a blind eye to animal cruelty all in the name of making some cash. Until, I was right there on the day on the fence for the big race. And to see a horse crash on the track and the screen go up nearly made me physically sick. The horse was killed. It changed everything. It’s greed and it’s barbaric !
Absolutely agree, Inga Lie – greed and barbarity. I attended the Melbourne Cup once but never again.
Horses are beautiful animals..my 2 bring me great joy and too see them being treated in this manner is heartbreaking and makes you realise how EVIL some people really are..The people doing this should be named and shamed..I hate this world at times
Disgusting. Thank you ABC. Now for a thorough investigation.
Jenny Wilkinson says
If you love animals, please don’t support the racing industry. The horse always loses, the greyhound also loses. You lose your soul.
Never again I’m not even going to work for them ever .. this is so wrong
The brutality is horrifying. Keep exposing this greedy money hungry industry and know that we are 100% behind you. These beautiful horses need to be saved.
Heart wrenching. Thank you for your dedication to this cause.
Pledge taken. Its time this “sport” was stopped and the animals protected.
Never have supported horse racing but did not realise the extent of the horror. I am appalled and think it is time for Australians to act.
I have been aware of the cruelty of this industry for many years. I do not support this industry, and I try to educate those around me that do. Watching this investigation tonight on 7.30 has traumatized me. My heart is hurting. To see what is being perpetrated upon these beautiful beings is diabolical. Thank you for being brave and taking on this barbaric industry.
Thank you ABC for enlightening the plight of animal abuse, such barbaric treatment should not exist in our world, let’s hope for some humane treatment after your revelation
Sandy Toussaint says
That people had to go to such lengths to expose the horror of the cruelty being enacted on horses is telling of deep seated industry and personal flaws. Cruelty often quietly known, allowed and covered, now more publicly deplored. It cannot go on. Bravo to the ABC, vets, and those who worked alongside. Bravo to the wonder of horses …
Yasmin Rose says
Let’s have willing humans be the “horses” of the future, if you believe this capitalist industry, thriving on gambling, is a necessity in the 21st century.
Thank you. Thank you. That couldn’t have been easy.
I’m just a complete mess after watching this but it will make me stronger and more determined to help stop this atrocity.
I have one of your pictures horse racing kills i printed it out a few years back around this time of the year and its on my office wall when im asked about the Melbourne cup sweeps around the place i simply say horse racing kills and that horses die during the Melbourne cup they walk away very quickly
I had an ex racer he was a beautiful animal when a horse touches your heart your life changes i still miss my Beau
Christine Haworth says
Horse racing is all about the money. It is the “Sport of sadists” because it is INHERENTLY cruel …. for MANY reasons. The VERY worst of it is NOT the breaking in of horses at the tender age of only TWO years old, the frequent whipping and other abuse, the drugging, the tongue-tying, or even the horses that die ON the track …… It is the hidden “WASTAGE”.
Thousands of healthy, young horses are being routinely OVERbred ….to be SACRIFICED! Even champion horses are routinely slaughtered.
Please …. take action NOW. Sign, share, protest, donate. And NEVER attend a race or bet.
YOU BET ….. THEY DIE.
Karl Armstrong says
Very Powerful expose yet the industry still denies it.
I’m heartbroken, sick to the stomach and angry, we need to stop this now! Everyone, if you love horses, don’t bet, don’t participate, protest anyway you can. We have to stop this greedy money hungry business. If they don’t have a business they won’t breed the horses and there will be no need to find homes, or to slaughter them when these greedy pigs want to dispose of them after they have made them mountains of money.
As a horse lover I could not bear to watch some of that appalling cruelty. What a disgusting industry that uses and abuses sentient beings in such an inhuman way. I can only hope that those involved will be called to account, and that racing will be consigned to scrap heap where it belongs. Thank you to the ABC for exposing the filthy underbelly of a national disgrace.
Words fail me, its such a cruel industry and its good that it is being exposed for what it is.
Veronica Betros says
It’s 2019 and cruelty to animals will no longer be tolerated. The horse racing industry is a disgrace and its treatment of these fine animals is nothing short of sadistic and evil. Never will I ever engage in a Melbourne Cup sweep, bet on any horse race; or partake in in any way in this grotesque and outdated industry.
Christine Douglas says
At Last revealed for what it is .Thankyou to the ABC especially to the Person who took the Videos you can’t hide anymore NSW Racing Industry Owners Trainers and those who have inflicted so much unnecessary cruelty also those filfthy Pet Meat Businesses who sell the meat may you All Rot in Hell..
Mark Douglas says
Hope Melbourne Cup is Banned and All who support it in their Stilettos Bow Ties Champagne Glasses PICNIC RUGS you are All Hypacrits and Support this Barbaric Industry hope its opened your eyes go spend your money on a worthwhile course..
Thank you for finally exposing this disgusting cruel practice that our beautiful equine athletes are exposed to once they are no longer viable or profitable. This wastage and the way these animals in the abattoirs are killed is abhorrent ! More people need to be exposed to the truth in the racing industry including the wastage of race horses and also the facts associated with racing, eg 122 horses have died on tracks this year and injuries sustained to these beautiful animals with racing.
Michael Moore says
Disgusting. Pledge taken.
I own an ex race horse and the way he had been mistreated because he wasn’t fast enough to race was dispicable – skin and bones! Now he is happy here at my place living out his days. He costs me a fortune to maintain and I run short on funds all the time but he never goes hungry, and I won’t let him end up in some slaughter house like those other poor souls It’s people like me that sacrifice their own needs to pick up the slack of these grubs that are out to make a buck on these beautiful animals! Follow this amazing steed on instagram under Kiwi_King_Jett
Jude Lennox says
This horror is , without question disgusting, unacceptable and totally UNFORGIVABLE !! What a despicable species the human animal is. Am l furious over this…..you bet l am !!
I have always enjoyed the once a year horse race The Melbourne Cup but after seeing how this horses can be discarded as a piece of rubbish sickens me to the core. I will never bet on any type of animal race again. What is the matter with these people..would they discard and treat their own family the way they do with their horses. SHAME SHAME SHAME.
Julie Coker-Godson says
I watched this programme tonight and was utterly disgusted by what I saw. Man’s inhumanity to man is eclipsed by his inhumanity to animals, especially horses and greyhounds. These poor animals are used for entertainment and to make money out of and then disposed of in the worst possible way imaginable. This is an indelible stain on the horse racing industry and one they cannot deny any longer. I await reports of legal action against the people responsible.
Helga Collins says
I used to be partners in owning race horses, went to the races and yes loved it. Then I started to see how the horses were treated, how young they were, the injuries they suffered. Slowly I found out more and more about the industry, the wastage and believe me its no secret in the industry. That was more then 10 years ago, have never attended nor will I ever attend the races again, don’t do cup sweeps or have a bet. The more people see and know, the more people will understand just what is involved in this so called sport of kings.
I am embarrassed to be a human.
M Gill says
Never have I been, nor will I ever attend a horse racing event. Thank you for exposing the horrific treatment of these beautiful animals. It is disgusting, despicable and inhumane.
Never ever! And this exposure should be shown to every person that attends a race meet!
Humans are the most cruel, greedy species on the planet!
Will be urging all my friends to take the pledge. This has to stop … all lives matter. Have said nup to the cup for 20 years now, it is the disgrace that stops a nation. Kudos to the ABC for this expose, and for informing the public of the dark heart of racing. Australians are compassionate people and I believe this will inspire them to put horses first.
I love horses but in reality they are often a source for dog eat. Racehorses may not be suitable for rehoming should be euthanised humanely ? At the race stables. My main concern in watching this programme is the behaviours in the abattoirs of the staff . I protest the way animals are treated in transports overseas and their ultimate cruel death. I am appalled that abattoirs in Australia are seen to be no better! Beating with pipes, electric devices, And the cruelty displayed towards dying animals should be investigated and those involved and filmed should be charged and dealt using animals welfare laws.
Thanks ABC for bringing this story to air
The sadistic people working in the slaughter house and yards should be charged with animal cruelty. If an animal has to be slaughtered, isnt time we made certain that the process was humane and that the animals were not tormented and tortured beforehand?? Don’t employ sadists.
I will never attend or bet on any horse race ever again. Thank you ABC for exposing this nightmare, but I will never unsee those poor horses.
maria eugenia garcia says
EVERYONE WANTS TO STOP THE KILLING OF INNOCENT AND INDEPENSIVE HORSES!
WE WANT TO DEFEND THEM !!!!!
Lydia Spriveri says
No doubt most people have been made aware of what goes on behind closed doors therefore why partake in this evil and heartless industry?! This is savagery and needs to stop.
Karen Genoff says
I shocked and disgusted at the cruelty shown to those beautiful horses and also those who were athletes used and abused……too many horses bred only for GREED. I will never again take part in any workplace sweep etc.
The world is an ugly place made ugly by MEN IN SUITS who take no responsibility and also those bullies who have no regard for creatures who share our planet.
An absolute disgrace. I couldn’t watch the programme as it’s just to upsetting. Everything needs to be done to stop this barbaric cruelty to these beautiful outstanding horses.
Beverley Moss says
I planned to do gardening today but after last night’s 7:30 report of the appalling cruelty I’m so traumatised that I decided to go for a walk. I found myself bursting into tears. I then took my dog to the park and came across other dog walkers who were also traumatised.
Lets all March in the street and make more people aware of why this industry must collapse. The Cup is not Melbourne’s celebration but Melbourne’s Shame.
Write as many letters as you can to those who need to know what your views are.
Des and Ros Watson says
Thank you to the people who have risked much to expose this. I just can not comprehend the mentality of the people who carry out this cruelty> electric shocks, kicking, whipping, swearing at an animal with no hope of protecting itself. How can the workers who do this be caring loving partners and parents?
Politicians who need legislation to ensure they declare what they have spent of tax payers money, prepared to ignore the treatment to animals to top up their huge salaries and overspending?
The Racing Commissioner, RSPCA and all gov bodies we trust to do their job, all well paid. These people have all failed us in their Duty of Care.
Jennifer Gleeson says
Once again the ABC exposes and leads public policy in Australia. Thank you ABC for exposing this horrific cruelty and the over breeding and waste of horse lives
Where are you going to place all the innocents who lose their jobs if you shut it down?
Hardly innocent Nile, but it could remain open if they were humane about it and only took the old ones.
The trouble is that money and greed controls so many monster humans. I wish I knew how to fix this. I could not watch the program but it does not take away how disgusted and sad I am.
Velvette Marea Anderson says
Are these people Human?
They are not Humane.
vile, despicable humans – we are here to protect & care for all animal – how we have failed! truly heartbreaking
Big tick Una
If you love horses you can’t love horse racing
JUDITH JEFFREY says
Be assured, even if it takes a while, the wide-spread practice of disposing of ex race-horses at knackeries will be made illegal. This heartbreaking betrayal of horses who have given everything to please humans will end. I was delighted to see all the events organized by Nup to the Cup. Remain strong and keep fighting for kindness. It will prevail.
Pledge taken! It’s time to seriously overhaul this disgraceful racehorse industry. Where do humans get off treating these beautiful creatures so cruelly just for financial gain?? Australians need to rally behind this and force change…
CONGRATULATIONS to the team for this EXPOSE!!!…Everybody NEEDS TO SEE IT!!!…I did watch the video and was in tears!!!…It’s so very sad and very heartbreaking!!!…But I wasn’t surprised!!!…I knew all about it!!!…I DO NOT SUPPORT THE RACING INDUSTRY AND NEVER WILL!!!…ESPECIALLY NOW!!!…I’m so DISGUSTED AT THOSE BASTARD EMPLOYEES INFLICTING SO MUCH PAIN TO THOSE POOR DEFENSELESS HORSES!!!…They SHOULD BE PROSECUTED AND CLOSED DOWN!!!!!!!
Horse rasing is cruel, disgusting, inhumane. Horses die before, during and after the race as they are pushed to exhaustion beyond their limits. They are abused, dopped, whipped to make money for their owners and when they don’t- they go to slaughter. Those intelligent, sensitive, beautiful animals mean NOTHING to the greedy horseracing industry, the Victorian Government supporting it and those who get rich from them. What has been revealed is just the tip of an iceberg. BOYCOTT the racing, BOYCOTT the Melbourne Cup and the Spring Carnival, never ever bet on hourses as you are betting on their pain and suffering. If making money is more important to you than the wealfare of those beautiful animals – you don’t deserve to call yourself “human”!
Thankyou ABC for exposing this shocking and heartbreaking cruelty. I will never support this industry!!
Makes me sick I hate horse and dog racing it all about the money.
They don’t give not one shit about the animals. Should send them to the slather house
Great to see this horrible sport is getting the exposure it deserve so. Well done ABC
So glad this industry has been exposed. This is nothing new, its been going on for many many years and the powers that be like to ignore the cruel and unjust treatment of horses, for their own gain and greed. Bad karma, bad people.
Kate Holmes says
I am heartbroken to the core. Each and every person directly/indirectly employed within the racing industry has blood on their hands and so do those that bet. I am a very ashamed and gutted Australian. The brutality inflicted on all these beautiful, vulnerable and frightened horses is devastating. These slaughter houses must be shut down immediately pending a full investigation and findings. The ducking, weaving, and dodging today by racing officials and government bodies is sickening. Again, gutsy ABC journalism – thank you.
Absolutely disgusting and horrifying. Cannot believe how evil people can be and I am beyond dissapointed in human kind. I feel for those poor animals and the suffering they had to go through. I believe in karma and I wish all those people suffer just like that. I decided to be a vegetarian after watching it yesterday.
This is what the Government is also trying to ban…any type of whistle blowing!!! So care for your rights and for the rights of animals and don’t allow those rights to expose such things to ever be taken away.
SONIA mobile says
These beautiful horses could be given to farmers. They could be used to help people and in turn be cared for and loved.
Nikita van Aalst says
Horrible, this has to stop! This cruelty is heartbreaking.
We need CPR in NZ too.
Madhuri Pillai says
Thank you ABC
Shocking good on 7 30 for airing it
The poor creatures that make them the money. The stars of their industry die like this ? Humans are horrible
Karen Leng says
Let’s stop this cruelty once and for all. Enough is enough!! We all need to take a stand and be the voice for these beautiful animals.
How can anyone with any decency bear to watch racing or attend Magic Millions Sales knowing full well that so many of those beautiful animals will end up facing a similar fate after their owners deem they are past their useful date (ie cannot win any more money for them) and sell them on? Thank you, ABC for having the courage and tenacity to follow this shameful trail and alert everyone.
Tearikivaine Gibbs says
Disgraceful and disturbing, all for the love of money, self serving money scum bags, I’m glad this footage has revealed that Exactis industry assholes..
Tearikivaine Gibbs says
Disgraceful and disturbing, all for the love of money, self serving money scum bags, I’m glad this footage has beeb revealed
I’ve been going to the races over 40 years. I was gambling on practically every Australian race meeting until this week. I’ve just closed my betting account and donated it to this site. I will never bet on a horse race again – ever. I am disgusted. Disgusted in them – and disgusted in myself for ignoring the obvious realities of this awful “industry”.
Mary Regts says
Congratulations Tony; actions speak louder than words!
Narelle Deeney says
Thank you ABC for exposing what some of us have known for years. When I found out what sort of ‘life’ horses had after they were no longer fit for racing I never participated in a sweep again.
Thank you for bringing this out in the open, everyone needs to be aware of this and then make their choice whether they still want to participate in “a bit of fun” clearly it’s no fun for these beautiful animals and majority of people have no idea what goes on behind the scenes! I will never participate in anything that uses any animal for entertainment and profit, absolutely disgusts me, makes me so angry to think of the hours these trainers spend with their animals, apparently they have a true bond with them and ensure they are looked after, haha, yeah right only while they are making money for them, the minute they are no longer profitable they just discard them like a piece of rubbish, shame shame shame!
Investigative journalism like this is essential in our democracy . We all have the right to know and the right to protest . Why is our Government trying to stifle these rights in the name of ” Security “. Thank you ABC , our only independent public broadcaster which is also essential to our democracy .
Marcella Curtis says
Never like any form of animals used fir sports or entertainment, and this has gone too far with such heinous cruelty and must end this industry once and for all
Jennifer Macdougall says
I will make sure everyone I know hears about this and I will tell them that if you go to the races, take part in a sweep or bet on dog or horse races, then you are part of all this. Everyone who cares about animals would now refuse to participate in any sport that uses animals. I had to force myself to watch the 7.30 report and to see the brutality of those workers and their attitude to the animals was more than sickening, it was barbaric.
I was going to go to the Melbourne cup this year for the first time in my life
I’ve just cancelled who would support such a horrible industry
Fi Bradshaw says
When my husband told me that his late dad, a vet once stated how corrupt and cruel the horse racing industry is, we have never been to the races again.
I hope this really helps with change, they seem to talk the talk then not commit to the changes that is needed. Thanks ABC 7.30 report for your broadcast about the end of life for these horses, but I would like to see the QLD government take issue with the abattoir in CABOOLTURE, treatment of these horses is disgraceful.
I have never bet on a horse race, and never will. I couldnt watch the episode, only few minute clips and felt sick to the stomach. Ban horse racing its a senseless cruel sport
Mathilde de Koning says
NEVER, NEVER will I attend or bet on either the horses or the Greyhounds, both are Animal abusing, Animal killing industries that need to be stopped, due to the excessive overbreeding, due to the horrendous cruelty involved, I am sickened by the lack of action from our gutless Politicians, who do NOTHING to help these voiceless, innocent souls!!!!
Janne Jenkins says
When will we ever grow up as a species and stop our exploitation of the innocent, sentient creatures with whom we share this planet?
Mimi Benadiba says
I never have been to a horse race and I never will go that’s not my form of entertainment. Not to mention cruelty to a living, breathing , being is barbaric and it has NO place in our society. These are American Mustang legions a symbol of the spirit of the west. NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE THESE BEAUTIFUL, bread to trust beings from the wild or any where else to become slaves and or hamburger for human consumption or pet food!.
boyd hore says
I have never bet on horses or dogs , and never will , they are both rotten and cruel forms of gambling run by rotten to the core people .
I, unthinkingly, used to very occasionally go to the races. I will NEVER go again, and I will ask anyone I know who is thinking of attending to really contemplate what they are doing. I signed and donated at change.org also.
It’s just appalling how these beautiful animals are being treated by this human race
Lucia Glavas says
I’ve never supported any form of horse racing, and never will. Horses should never be whipped and forced to run. They are free spirited creatures, and should run only when they feeling like it.
Another appalling animal abuse. “Animals won’t go to hell, thanks to humans, they are already there” I will keep fighting to free them.
Verne Simmons says
I cannot what a horse race any more. I knew it was a cruel exploitative industry, but it is worse than I expected. Don’t want to see ads or promotions for Melbourne Cup either!
Verne Simmons says
watch that was….
Marcella Curtis says
I do not support this industry in any way, I definitely abhor what cruelty is being inflicted on those sentient animals.
This is very serious and a crime, and needs to be punished now.
They r nothing but big little men oh such big men can’t wait for u to be named and shamed what do your wives and children and children friend and your parents think of you now big men I’m sure they are totally disgusted in what you have done
I went to a race once when I was a kid. I did not enjoy it. I have never been to another race since and not going to happen.
I know how those people treat the horses.
Thankyou to the ABC for exposing this horrible industry, It breaks my heart to see All this, keep exposing these vial people.
Paul Smith says
Thankyou for bringing this appalling behavior to light. I live 40 minutes from Meramist abattoir and was so disgusted by what you had discovered that I went to Meramist to eyeball these people myself. I discovered that the directors of Meramist are an Antwerp based company called Multimeat. By emailing one of the directors, one Christine Nauwelaers the email made it back to Mike Eathorne the Meramist GM. He has published a statement which is so lacking in remorse it defies belief. The Moreton Shire Mayor seems to be onside but time will tell. If you want to demand answers mailto:[email protected] or mailto:[email protected]
Watching this brought me to tears …such beautiful creatures who clearly have feelings …what kind of beast would ever think it is ok to treat any living creature in such a way???? …I shudder to think they walk amongst us! This is never ok …I never have and NEVER will support such a cruel, barbaric & self serviant interest! Shame on those that sell their soul to worship the dollar! : (
Louisa Hayes says
Just stop slaughtering animals full stop.
All animals are equals you can’t choose one species over the other.
If people didn’t eat meat then this would stop.
Cruelty to animals is endless I hang my head in shame to be a human the biggest virus ok on this planet.
I cannot believe such things are going on, our beloved Horses are being slaughted.I am shocked. Ron
Saw this documentary pop up on google news, and watched on YouTube.
Replying from Ontario, Canada, this shakes us to our core.
There are no explanations that explain the slaughter of animals that have been put through the rigours of training, making money on the tracks to support the lives of owners and trainers, to feed families, clothe your children, and so you can drive your vehicles in luxury everyday, fatten your wallets and line your pockets with paper and coin, then, to throw them in a swamp full of evil and watch them end up on the platters of european and asian deli’s and restaurants, as you sip your glass of champagne and laugh over who is going to be the next big winner, and eventual slaughterhouse master…..
You sicken the world of fans, supporters of thoroughbred aftercare communities, and the public, you should be ashamed to even walk the dirt of a track your horses raced upon.
You all should face the wrath of the justice system for failing to provide proper retirement for those who have layed down their lives for your personal gain and greed.
Belinda Ball says
Amazing work everyone!!
Lorraine Cook says
I have not bet on a horse, or watched a horse race for years. It rewards the winners generously but the majority are treated with malice, abuse, and cruelty that I could never overlook.
Is there anything more magnificent than a horse in full flight, mane blowing in the breeze, muscles rippling? But it should be in a field or on a beach. If they’re not sick, dying or very old then WHY? I don’t attend rodeos either after seeing a strong, healthy steer break his back while bucking. He dragged himself out of the arena on his two front legs . Wasn’t put down for 4 hours. Happens to horses as well. The only way I would attend one now is to have the camera rolling and share with the world how barbaric animal ‘sports’ are.
If you want to gamble go to the pokies or play the lotto – it’s inhumane and stressful for horses to be whipped down a racetrack for entertainment. With modern technology we shouldn’t be betting on live animals who suffer pain and anguish to please the masses. Well done for exposing this tragedy as well as dog racing and cruelty to animals. Enough!

The report on TV was so very good for exposing the cruelty of racing, the overbreeding and the indifference those who profit from racing have once the horse is no longer a winner. Keep up the good fight please, and we will continue to support you. You have made a big difference – this is the start, lets keep it rolling for those beautiful animals.
Animals are not entertainment or money-making machines! Thank you for fighting for our horses! I will do whatever I can to aid in this fight!

The racing industry was always made to be a special event with so much glamour and romanticism attached. When the dirty reality of this industry like so many others is exposed people pretend they had no idea? Some may not have but the rest have just pretended that it didn’t exist. Go the extra mile people and stop breeding dogs and cats too…where do you think pet food comes from?? So much of pet food is unwanted horses. Cows, sheep, goats and chickens all have a right to life the same as horses too. Horses are a very loving animal and deserve better lives than are given to them. Humans have the right to contraception so as not to overpopulate and horses should not be breed needlessly so that someone might just have a win at the races!
Have never interested in horse racing. Just interested in the welfare of horses.

I cant believe i just heard the head of racing & the head of rugby Peter Valandy just said on nation television (30/10/20) that it was only 3 race horses that was were killed & slipped through the rules of not sending race horses to their deaths at a meat factory. ONLY 3. WTF. Stop horse racing for ever. They built our country & we race them to their deaths.
Stop this cruel industry & sack Peter Valandys from horse racing Australa.
I worked in the industry for a year about thirty years ago.
It’s a weird world where rich people pay poor tiny people to whip horses for a few guineas and bragging rights.
They call it, The Sport of Kings.
I’d suggest shining a spot light on Queen Elizabeth II and the Arabian princes that prop up this industry.
It’s more corrupt than dog racing… The bucks just come in bigger bundles.
